Is Casein Protein Powder better than whey?
Casein protein powder cannot really be compared to whey, as both protein powders are quite unique from one another and suit different purposes. Both casein and whey protein are products of milk and provide very similar amino acid profiles.
Whey however is very quickly digested and its amino acids are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream. This makes it an idea protein source for use after a workout to meet with the bodies needs for muscle repair and growth.
Casein on the other hand is much slower digesting and can take up to 7 hours to fully digest. Its peptide and micelle structure are disturbed by the acid in your stomach and this causes the casein to form a gelatinous structure which slows the digestion process. So rather than flooding your body with essential amino acids, it forms a steady flow of amino acids over a far longer period. While this may not be useful for after a workout, it makes casein ideal for its anti-catabolic effect while sleeping. When you consume casein before bed, it helps maintain muscle mass and reduces muscle breakdown during the night.
