Pure Label Nutrition’s Grass-Fed Whey offers a hormone-free whey that is sourced from happy cows munching on Non-GMO pasture. This product is about as natural as they come, but how effective is it? Read our full review below!
Pure Grass-Fed delivers 23grams of protein with 2grams of net carbs and 2.5grams of fat per 31.3g serve.
This product includes a naturally sourced Protein Concentrate, which is the cheapest and least efficient form of whey protein, but it does come with some added benefits. Concentrates also contain additional micronutrients and phospholipids which are used to form muscle cell membranes. These are normally filtered out in the more pure whey isolates. In the case of this product, the whey is sourced from Non-GMO grass-fed cows that are raised hormone-free.
Aside from the protein source, there are just four ingredients added to this product. These include Cocoa and Natural Flavor to taste as well as Stevia for sweetness. The only remaining ingredient is Xanthin Gum, which is a thickener that is used to help provide a creamier texture.
We do think there is one ingredient that shouldn’t be missing from this list, which is the digestive enzyme lactase. We will talk more about this later.
While this product only includes the less effective whey concentrate, it does provide some additional benefit from the healthy micronutrients which are normally filtered out of isolates. However, it does come with a little higher cholesterol than we would like at 18% of your recommended daily intake. We can think of more exciting ways to use up our cholesterol allowance.
It’s also worth noting that whey concentrates also contain higher levels of lactose. We would normally like to see an added enzyme such as lactase to help digest the lactose content in whey concentrate. So if you suffer from lactose intolerance, this product is probably not for you.
This product mixed surprisingly well given that it doesn’t contain lecithin which is often added to improve mixability.
The texture was also really nice and creamy and with full milk, perhaps a bit too creamy. We suggest using no-fat milk or water, which also provided excellent results. The taste was also fantastic and didn’t include any bitterness. The flavor was more like mild milk chocolate.
We’re read some reports of taste variation between batches. This is not uncommon with naturally sourced products, especially grass-fed sourced whey.
While this product is produced using a cheaper form of whey, the value is provided in how that whey is sourced.
Naturally sourced products are generally far more expensive, but Pure Label Nutrition has managed this for a surprisingly low price. That makes this product a great choice for those seeking to get the best that nature has to provide without the artificial’s, but without a high price tag to match. This products protein cost came in at a little lower than the average, that’s impressive for such a naturally sourced product.
This is a great product, but its also a compromise. Naturally sourced products such as these often come with a high price tag, but by using a cheaper whey concentrate the price is kept lower and more affordable. This product offers a budget option for those that demand the highest quality of naturally sourced products. If that’s important to you, but you want to save some dollars on protein, then this product is a great choice.
Levels Grass-Fed Whey is a remarkably similar product to Pure Label Grass-Fed. It came out a little bit cheaper in our review, but maybe marginally less tasty. We would find it hard to pick between these two, but it does provide options.
