Ingredients

79

The ingredient list for MyProtein Impact Whey Protein is fairly straightforward, with the primary protein source being whey protein concentrate. Whey concentrate is a widely used form of protein derived from milk, which typically retains more fats and carbs compared to whey isolate but offers a balanced profile for muscle recovery and growth. The 22g of protein per 30g serving provides a solid hit of protein for those looking to supplement their intake.

However, the product contains several other ingredients worth noting, both positively and negatively. Sunflower lecithin is included, which aids in the mixability of the powder, ensuring it blends smoothly in water or milk. This is a welcome addition, especially since MyProtein switched from soy lecithin, which was used in the previous product iteration. This makes the product accessible to those avoiding soy-based ingredients.

The inclusion of artificial sweeteners like sucralose and acesulfame potassium may still be a drawback for some users. While these sweeteners help keep the product low in sugar and calories, those trying to minimize artificial ingredients in their diet could find this to be a sticking point. That said, these sweeteners do prevent unnecessary sugars from being added, which helps keep the overall carbohydrate content down to just 3g per serving.

Cocoa processed with alkali, also known as Dutch-processed cocoa, is used here to provide the chocolate flavor. This type of cocoa has a milder, smoother taste compared to regular cocoa, which helps create the "chocolate milkshake" flavor. Natural and artificial flavoring is also added to enhance the taste, giving the product its distinct chocolate milkshake flavor. Cellulose gum is used as a thickening agent, ensuring the powder has a smooth consistency when mixed with liquids and preventing clumping. A small amount of salt is also present, likely to enhance flavor and balance out the sweetness of the chocolate and sweeteners. It’s minimal enough not to significantly impact sodium intake but plays a subtle role in making the taste more well-rounded.

Lastly, the presence of potassium as listed in the nutritional facts (120mg per serving) is worth mentioning. Potassium is an essential electrolyte that supports muscle function and helps regulate fluid balance, making it a beneficial addition for those consuming the product after a workout. While the amount is relatively small, every bit contributes to electrolyte balance, which is crucial for recovery.

While MyProtein Impact Whey Protein offers an effective source of protein, some might wish it included digestive enzymes to aid those who struggle with lactose digestion, especially considering the higher lactose content in whey concentrate. Adding enzymes such as lactase or bromelain could help mitigate any potential digestive discomfort. We were a little surprised MyProtein didn't add an enzyme but perhaps they thought it might detract from an otherwise simple and straightforward ingredient list.

Effectiveness

83

In terms of effectiveness, MyProtein Impact Whey Protein delivers on its primary goal: providing a solid protein source to support muscle recovery and growth. Each 30g serving offers 22g of protein, which is fairly standard for a whey concentrate product, making it ideal for post-workout recovery and muscle protein synthesis. Whey protein concentrate, contains all essential amino acids, including a strong dose of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) like leucine, which is particularly effective for muscle repair and growth. This makes the product highly suitable for athletes and regular gym-goers looking to enhance recovery and promote muscle mass.

Digestion

Whey protein concentrate has a more moderate digestion speed, which is beneficial for a steady release of amino acids over time, supporting both immediate and longer-term muscle recovery post-exercise. While it’s not as fast-absorbing as whey isolate, it still offers a significant advantage in terms of amino acid availability within a reasonable time after consumption. For most people, this is more than sufficient for meeting their protein needs after exercise, though those looking for faster absorption may prefer isolate or hydrolyzed whey.

In terms of the product's overall macronutrient profile, the low net carb content (3g) and fat content (2g) make it an appealing choice for those watching their carb intake. However, it’s worth noting that the effectiveness of the product could be further enhanced with the inclusion of additional ingredients like digestive enzymes. While many people will digest whey protein concentrate without issue, those who are lactose-sensitive or experience bloating may find it harder to process. Adding enzymes could improve its usability for a broader audience, particularly for those who struggle with lactose found in whey concentrate.

Overall, MyProtein Impact Whey Protein performs effectively for its intended purpose—helping users meet their protein intake goals and supporting muscle recovery. It’s a no-nonsense, reliable option for most, but its lack of added digestive aids and other supplementary ingredients keeps it more in the realm of basic protein support rather than an all-in-one performance product.

Taste

88

When we first tried this product we gave the "chocolate smooth" a go, and while good, we were not bowled over by it. For this updated review we went with the Chocolate Milkshake which seemed to be an improvement. The chocolate flavor isn’t overpowering, it’s more of a subtle, creamy chocolate, almost like an actual chocolate milk. When mixed with water, the flavor holds up well, though it’s a bit lighter and a touch on the sweet side. The sweetness doesn't come across as artificial, but it’s definitely noticeable, which may or may not appeal depending on how sweet you like your shakes.

Mixing it with milk, on the other hand, elevates the flavor. The creaminess from the milk made the chocolate taste richer. With milk, the texture is smooth and slightly thicker, which gives it a more satisfying consistency. We did think it was more enjoyable this way, as the added creaminess from the milk made it feel a bit more substantial and creamy.

In terms of texture, it mixes well with both water and milk, but there is a slightly noticeable graininess with water. It’s nothing off-putting, but if you’re picky about smoothness, it’s something to be aware of. With milk, that graininess isn't really noticeable, and the overall texture is more silky. On the plus side, no clumping, which is a relief because no one wants to be stuck chewing through their protein shake.

Overall, it delivers a pleasant, versatile chocolate flavor that works well for a variety of uses, whether you’re drinking it straight or blending it into smoothies or oatmeal.

Value

85

When considering the value of MyProtein Impact Whey Protein, it's important to recognize both the positive changes and the trade-offs in this updated review. The shift from soy lecithin to sunflower lecithin is a notable improvement for those looking to avoid soy, and the slight increase in protein per serving is also a welcome upgrade. However, with this comes an increase in serving size and a higher carbohydrate content—up from 4% to 10%—which may be a factor for those closely monitoring their carb intake.

The product’s overall protein purity has also shifted from 79% to 73%, which indicates that the concentrate is slightly less pure than before. This change, while not drastic, could be a consideration for those prioritizing protein density. On the plus side, the price has been reduced a little, making the product more accessible. While this helps balance out the changes in formula, it's worth noting that there are similarly priced alternatives on the market that offer whey blends with digestive enzymes or even budget whey isolates that boast a higher protein percentage per serving.

That said, MyProtein Impact Whey continues to provide solid value, especially for those who need a reliable, affordable protein powder without too many extras. For individuals who prioritize protein purity or seek added benefits like digestive enzymes, there may be alternatives that offer slightly more at a comparable price. However, the product remains a strong contender for budget-conscious users looking for a straightforward whey protein with good macros.

Conclusion

84

MyProtein Impact Whey Protein continues to offer a dependable option for those seeking a more budget-friendly protein powder, though recent changes have slightly shifted its appeal. The switch to sunflower lecithin and the modest increase in protein per serving are clear improvements, especially for those looking to avoid soy-based ingredients. However, the product’s protein purity has slightly decreased, and the carbohydrate content has risen, which may be less desirable for those watching their macros closely.

Despite these adjustments, the overall price drop ensures that it still competes well with other products in the same price range. While it no longer offers quite the same level of purity as before, it remains a solid choice for people who want a straightforward, affordable protein powder. For users who value digestive enzymes or higher protein purity, there are alternatives in the same price bracket. Nevertheless, MyProtein Impact Whey is still a versatile and effective option for daily protein supplementation, offering good value for those looking for a basic, reliable whey protein.
