Met-Rx Natural Whey provides 23grams of protein with 6grams of net carbs and 2grams of fat per serve. This is a little high in carbs, which is partly due to the use of Whey Protein Concentrate as the primary protein source. This concentrate is the least refined whey form and contains more carbs and fat than Whey Protein Isolate which is the second source of protein included in this product.
One of the selling points of MET-Rx has always been that their isolate is ultra-filtered which sounds fancy, but as the product contains more whey concentrate, the total digestible protein content comes in at 69.7% pure. For comparison, ISOPURE Low Carb is around 75.8% pure with the use of only whey protein isolate.
For our chocolate flavor, they have included Cocoa and Natural Flavors. Fructose and Stevia Extract are used as sweeteners. The only other ingredient in this product is Soy Lecithin, which is used to help aid mixing.
This product is friendly in that it ticks some natural boxes such as not including artificial ingredients, but that might not be enough for you. This product’s protein is not Non-GMO grass-fed or hormone-free. It just takes out some of the ingredients that scare us, so we tend to think of it are more half-way natural.
While this is great, it also lacks some of the performance of MET-Rx’s Ultramyosin product that is a straight whey isolate. That makes this product a bit less effective. If this product kept its Ultramyosin heritage we would have found it far more impressive.
Its also worth noting that while MET-Rx claim to have kept the lactose content low, it still contains whey concentrate that is generally higher in lactose. If you suffer from lactose intolerance, then you may experience some digestive issues with this product. A digestive enzyme such as Lactase may have been a helpful addition for this reason, but was not included.
The taste was good in both milk and water with this product, but nothing too exciting.
However good reliable flavor in both milk and water can be hard to pull off, but it’s done well in this product. The texture was also not bad and the powder mixed quickly into both milk and water.
This product is mid-ranged and with a mid-range price.
So basically the value for money is about what we would expect from this product at this quality.
While we don’t think this product does any particular job outstandingly, it’s going to be popular for those that want a bit of everything. Admittedly, this is not a straight isolate that’s low carb, but its also not packed with artificial additives. This product suits those that want a tasty protein powder that delivers decent results with nothing in it that scares us and all that for a good price. That makes MET-Rx Natural Whey an attractive option for many and a great beginner’s powder.
