KOS Organic Plant Protein offers vegans a highly nutritious protein supplement, but how should you use this product? We take a closer look in our full review.
KOS provides 20grams of protein, 7 grams of net carbs and 6 grams of fat in each 39g double scoop serve. That’s moderately high in carbs and quite high in fats, though we think a good deal of that fat might be the kind you actually want in your diet with ingredients such as flaxseed included.
Protein is delivered from Organic Pea Protein, Organic Flax Seed, Organic Quinoa, Organic Pumpkin Seed Protein and Organic Chia Seed. However, like similar brands such as PlantFusion, this product contains a huge array of greens and other extracts to help boost your micronutrient intake as well as to meet with the protein powders specific goals. In the case of KOS, this product is designed to be both a general protein supplement that is suitable for vegans as well as a weight loss product to replace meals and curb hunger.
KOS also includes Organic Coconut Milk which helps give the product a nice creamy texture but also likely contributes some of those good fats we talked about earlier. Organic Cocoa Powder is used to provide a rich chocolate taste. Organic Inulin is included as a soluble fiber which slows down digestion and helps keep you fuller longer. Organic Coconut Sugar is pretty self-explanatory, its basically sugar. Organic Acacia Gum is used as a stabilizer and thickener which helps add to the creamy texture. Sea Salt is used as a flavor enhancer. Natural Plant-based Chocolate Flavour, again is added to taste. Organic Stevia is used to add sweetness, as is Natural Monk Fruit Extract Flavor which doubles for both a little bit of sweetness and also adds a slight caramel flavor.
A Fruit and Vegetable Flavor Blend is also added. While we are not sure how this specifically adds to the flavor, it no doubt accounts for some of the excellent vitamin and mineral figures we see in the nutritional facts.
Lastly, an enzyme blend is added which includes Amylase, Protease, Lipase, Lactase and Cellulase. Some of these enzymes are more specifically aimed at digesting different parts of this powder such as the pea protein and also enzymes that specifically work at breaking down plant fiber.
Suggested Use: Mix 1 serving (2 scoops) in 8-12oz of cold water or non-dairy drink and blend or shake in a shaker cup. Use as a meal-replacement option 1 to 2 times a day for healthy weight management.
This product contains a good deal of net carbs as well as fats. As discussed previously in this review, the fats we believe may well be healthy fats from the likes of the coconut ingredients as well as some of the nuts. We can only guestimate this, as there is no data to review the composition of the fats.
So far as usage goes, this protein is best used as a simple supplement for vegans looking to increase their protein intake. It also makes a fantastic and nutritious meal replacement for those seeking weight loss. However, this product will not be quite as effective as some other products we have reviewed with this specific goal in mind. Having said that, if you struggle with energy levels with meal replacement shakes then this one might be worth trying as it still has enough fat and carbs to give you some energy to get to your next meal.
This product doesn’t mix as well as some other vegan protein powders, but it’s about what we normally expect from a lot of plant-based powders.
Having said this, the flavor is not too bad, though it is quite nutty and earthy. We actually preferred this product in water rather than almond milk as the milk boosted the nutty flavor to the point where it was a bit too much for us.
This product actually offers pretty good value and comes in cheaper than similar products from the likes of PlantFusion.
Protein quality is also excellent, but this product is not really designed with athletic performance in mind. Yes, it will help, but its not the core goal of this product.
This is a great product, but probably best used as a general-purpose protein powder that offers a more nutritious level of vitamins to meet your daily needs. We think this product is best suited specifically to Vegans and Vegetarians rather than specifically towards the goals of athletic performance or weight loss. For those goals, there are other products that are perhaps more suitable with those goals in mind.
