ISOPURE is probably most famous for its ZERO CARB product line, though their LOW CARB product is so low in carbs that its almost indistinguishable. We tested the Dutch Chocolate flavor and found only 1 gram of carbs per serve. It’s certainly way ahead of much of its competition and makes it an ideal choice for those using protein powder on a ketogenic diet.
ISOPURE has also put in a little value-added bonus with their product, a blend of vitamins and minerals. So many vitamins in fact, that you could easily call this product a protein supplement and multivitamin in one.
Ingredients
One 33 gram scoop contains 25 grams of protein, only 1 gram of carbs and just half a gram of fat. That’s extremely low on carbs at fat! This product’s protein comes from a pure Whey Isolate rather than a blended product. This provides the best value protein punch, though misses out on some of the benefits of a blended product containing concentrated and hydrolyzed whey.
NB. It should be noted that in some areas this product has a suggested serving size that is twice that presented in this review and provides 50 grams of protein per server rather than 25 grams. We would not recommend using this product at such a large serving size, as it exceeds your body’s ability to digest more than about 30 grams of protein over a 3 hour period in accordance with current research.
What’s impressive is the additive list which turns an excellent protein supplement into a great source of minerals and vitamins. This includes Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Iodine, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Molybdenum, and Chloride.
In addition, they have included l-Glutamine, which is especially helpful for muscle recovery. Other additions include Soy Lecithin which is used for mixability. Xanthan Gum is used as a stabilizer. As a sweetener, they have included Sucralose.
The only thing we would have liked to see in this product would be a blend of digestive enzymes, but given the list of inclusions, we are pretty impressed!
Effectiveness
This product is a highly effective protein powder made from quality whey isolate and without carbs and with almost negligible fat content.
This product is ideal for elite athletes and those serious about building lean muscle. While it could also be used for weight loss, it’s perhaps not best suited for this purpose and other products may be more effective for this goal.
Taste
We found the flavor of dutch chocolate to be quite a strong chocolate flavor. It also worked very well when mixed in water and we probably preferred the flavor when mixed with water rather than milk. This would again make it an ideal choice for a ketogenic diet where water may be preferred over whole milk. If anything we found it to be a little too sweet, but that would depend a lot on personal taste.
Mixability with this product scores very high and we found it worked well in both milk and water without clumping. We found the texture to be exceptionally smooth.
Value
This product rates extremely well in the value department.
While it may not be the cheapest protein powder on the market, it is very cheap for a pure whey isolate and offers a level of quality and effectiveness that is hard to beat at its price point.
Conclusion
ISOPURE LOW CARB is excellent value, even before considering its additional value provided by way of its impressive micronutrient inclusions. This makes ISOPURE’s product an excellent alternative to other products such as Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard. If you find protein powders hard to digest, then its lack of digestive enzymes may be a negative factor worth considering, but we think the added micronutrient blend more than makes up for this. ISOPURE LOW CARB delivers great taste, excellent quality and fantastic value!
