Orgain’s mission is to provide clean organic protein products that are devoid of artificial and genetically modified ingredients. Its product lineup is mainly focused on powders and premixed shakes including products designed for kids, though they do have a small line of bars as well. We grabbed some of their flagship organic protein powder in the creamer chocolate fudge flavor for this review.
For those seeking high-quality natural products, Orgain is one of the few that might meet your needs, so let’s take a closer look!
Two scoops (46grams per serve) of Orgain contains 21grams of protein, 3.5grams of fat and 15grams of carbs, of which 7grams are fiber.
The protein blend is made up of Organic Pea Protein, Organic Brown Rice Protein, and Organic Chia Seed. There is nothing too special about this blend, though the blend of pea and rice protein is one we prefer as it provides a nice balanced amino acid profile.
The sodium content we think is a little high at 200mg or 8% of your daily allowance. Carbs are also a little high but are mainly made up of 7 grams of fiber and 5 grams of alcohol sugar. Yes that’s pretty high, but we should point out that carbs made up of fiber and alcohol sugar are not terribly digestible. These do not have the same impact on the body as the carbs we would rather avoid.
So what else is in it? Orgain has included what they call their “Organic Creamer Base” which we will talk later about in terms of taste and texture. It includes Organic Acacia Gum, Organic High Oleic Sunflower Oil, Organic Inulin, Organic Rice Dextrins, Organic Rice Bran Extract, and Organic Rosemary Extract. All of these work together to give both creamy texture and taste to the product, even when mixed with water where we think it’s most effective.
For sweeteners, they have added Organic Erythritol and Organic Stevia. While these do their job well, consumption of erythritol which is a sugar alcohol can cause some digestive upset in some people. Though we should also point out that the amount included is very small so this should not be an issue unless you are extremely sensitive.
Common stabilizers have also been included such as Organic Acacia Gum, Organic Guar Gum, and Xanthan Gum. In this product, the only thing left to speak of is the flavor additives which include Organic Alkalized Cocoa, Organic Natural Flavors, and Sea Salt.
Combine 2 scoops with 12 ounces of water or almond milk in a shaker cup or blender. Enjoy!
This product is ideally formulated for weight loss with some lean muscle-building benefit. However, if your main aim is to use this product as part of a muscle growth routine, its protein content is a bit lower than we would like. While that is partly to be expected from a plant-based protein, it’s still lower than we would prefer.
For those using this product to improve lean muscle development, we would suggest increasing the serving size to 60grams per serve, which would provide around 27.4grams of protein per serving rather than the usual 21grams.
We tried the Creamy Chocolate Fudge flavor and were pretty impressed. The chocolate flavor was only enhanced by the creamy texture and notes of caramel fudge. Its smooth texture even in water makes this a perfect protein hit when on the move and you cant carry fresh milk with you.
Mixability with this product was actually best for us in water where the products creamer base actually worked pretty well. It provided a very creamy texture which makes us think this is perfect for those seriously looking to cut calories by using water rather than milk. It also did a pretty good job in milk too but didn’t dissolve quite as quickly as it did in water.
This is a high-quality product, but the protein content itself is a little low for our liking.
Its price, however, is reasonable and stacks up well against other plant-based proteins of comparable quality.
We like the quality of the protein provided here, but its protein content is lower than most. However, if you are looking for a high-quality organic product then the price is what you would come to expect from this kind of quality. What we liked most of all was the unique and pleasant creamy texture that’s a big win for this product, making it unique among vegan products in terms of taste and texture. Don’t underestimate taste, as you will be less likely to use it if you don’t love it.
The price of this product came in very close to PlantFusions Complete Protein that offers a competitive alternative. We would suggest that if results are more important to you, that PlantFusion would offer a very marginally better choice. If taste and 100% organic ingredients are of paramount importance, then Orgain is a very solid choice. We would suggest trying both and seeing what works best for you.
