When do I take Protein Powder?
When protein powder is used as part of a strength building routine it should be taken directly after a workout. This allows for essential amino acid availability for muscle repair and growth. Casein on the other hand should be taken directly before bed. Casein is unique in that it provides slow protein delivery over a period of around 7 hours. This steady protein supply of protein has an anti-catabolic effect. It essentially reduces muscle breakdown during your sleep.
When using protein powder as part of a weight loss diet it can be used as a meal replacement. Protein is less likely to be stored as fat and when combined with exercise can help build lean muscle. Protein only has 4 calories per gram, yet reduces hunger for longer periods than carbohydrates.
