Neotame

Ingredient Type: Sweetener (non-nutritive)
Additive Number: 961
Caution

Neotame is a non-nutritive artificial sweetener that is chemically similar to aspartame but is much sweeter, up to 13,000 times sweeter than sugar. It is used as a sugar substitute in a variety of food and beverage products, including protein powders and other nutritional supplements.

Neotame is safe for consumption in small amounts, as determined by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is not metabolized in the body and is excreted unchanged, so it does not contribute calories to the diet. However, individuals with a sensitivity to aspartame or phenylalanine, which is a component of neotame, should avoid consuming it.
