100% Whey - Review

EAS is one of the more subtly marketed brands we have come across, though they have a huge line up of supplements available. Today we are looking at their 100% Whey product that certainly appears to be exceptionally cheap. Inexpensive often denotes low value ingredients and inefficient protein content, but we will take a closer look and see if this is really the case.

We grabbed a 5 pound tub of their chocolate flavour because we tend to prefer this flavor and its normally the top seller.

INGREDIENTS - What's in it?

Two scoops (43grams per serve) of EAS 100% Whey contains 30 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of fat and 6 grams of carbs.

The protein component of this product is Whey Protein Concentrate which is not exactly high tech and the cheapest and least pure form of whey used in protein supplements. This is likely why EAS can offer their product at such a good price. Many would avoid concentrates in favour of isolates due to the higher fat and carb content of concentrates. However interestingly this product is quite low in both fat and carbs. Concentrates also contain beneficial Phosopholipids and Conjugated Linoleic Acid which are no longer present in an isolate due to the filtering process.

Aside from the whey concentrate, this product is fairly lean with not too many ingredients. It contains Cocoa, Natural & Artificial Flavour and Salt. Soy Lecithin is added along with Carrageenan and Xanthan Gum as stabalizers. Acesulfame Potassium and Sucralose are added as sweeteners.

We have noted that the cholesterol level in this product is reasonably high at 100mg per serve. This is 33% of your daily recommended value. We can think of more exciting ways to use up our daily allowance of cholesterol but depending on your diet this may not be an issue.

PRICE - What does it cost?

The manufacturers recommended retail price is $73.50 for 5lbs. This works out to be about $1.39 per 30 grams of protein content. Thats pretty cheap, but consider that the last price we checked on Amazon was only $44.99 which brings down the protein cost to just $0.85 per 30 grams. Thats really really cheap!

If you are looking for the best price, we recommend checking out Amazon and purchasing a 5lb tub of EAS 100% Whey.

MIXABILITY - How can i use it?

Mixability with this product was excellent and took absolutely no time at all in milk or water! Mixing gave us a smooth texture with no clumps at all.

TASTE - What's it taste like?

We tried the Chocolate, but there really are not many flavors to choose from. EAS only make Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla. When mixed with milk the chocolate flavor was mild but pleasant without being too sweet, however it was also unremarkable. In water it was a bit weak and while not totally unpleasant, we can think of far better tasting products if mixing with water is your aim.

OUR VERDICT

This product is very cheap and largely this is due to the cheaper whey concentrate included as the protein component. Given its lower quality protein component, it performs better than we expected with quite low fat and carbs. If you're looking for a budget option, are mixing with milk and don't mind the few artificial additives, then this may be an option for you.

However, we would recommend taking a closer look at Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard. It provides a better quality protein that we believe offers better value as a budget option as well as better flavors. If you're an athlete then we would suggest this is not the protein supplement for you and to consider a product such as ISOPURE's Low Carb/Zero Carb.
